A period of wintry mix may lead to minor accumulations in the mountains and higher elevations of the foothills on Friday before changing to a cold rain.
Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for the mountain counties of NC for Friday morning with the chance of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Under an inch of snow and sleet is expected with a possible glaze of ice as well before temperatures warm above freezing later Friday morning.
Short range models show the majority of the precipitation remaining across western NC during the morning hours before moving into the foothills and piedmont during the late afternoon and evening hours. It looks like the heaviest rains will enter the Catawba Valley and Charlotte metro after 5:00 p.m. Friday.
Over the next 24 hours, from midnight Friday to midnight Saturday, around a quarter to a half of an inch of rain is expected for the foothills and piedmont. Lower amounts are expected in eastern NC, with higher amounts possible in the mountains.
More rain is expected on Saturday and Sunday morning before tapering for Sunday afternoon. The good news is the rain amounts have trended lighter for this second system.
