An upper level low pressure across the western United States will allow copious amounts of moisture to move into the southeast United States, which will allow numerous days of rain through next week.
An upper level ridge will amplify over the west coast and will stretch northward into Alaska and Canada, which will allow an upper level low to strengthen over the Four Corners. The jet stream will be cut across the eastern United States, which will allow disturbances to pass from west to east this week.
Notice the jet stream is closest and strongest on Tuesday and Wednesday and that is when the heaviest rains are expected across the Carolinas. Moisture levels will also be well above average a couple of times during this week.
The first wave of moisture arrives on Sunday afternoon through Monday morning. After this wave passes, a brief dry period moves into the Carolinas before more moisture moves in for Tuesday evening through the end of the week.
Models show a chance of a little wintry weather on Sunday Morning across a portion of the mountains. Accumulations are not expected; however, there may be another brief wintry mix on Tuesday Night and Wednesday morning across the mountains. Light accumulations are possible before warmer air moves in from the south on Wednesday morning.
Temperatures are expected to also remain below average on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday with low level flow coming from the north. On Tuesday, temperatures are expected to warm to near average with breaks in the clouds.
The major story will be the total precipitation from Sunday through Saturday. Some areas may see two months of rain before this week is finished, especially in the mountains and foothills. As you move east, you will be further away from the best upper level energy and moisture and rain totals are expected to be lower in coastal areas.
The image below is my current rainfall estimate for the next seven days from midnight Sunday through midnight next Sunday (2/24/2019). I would not be shocked if some area in red see up to 10 inches of rain over the next seven days.
Another system is possible next Sunday or next Monday before hopefully we begin to dry out for a few days.
