World Meteorological Organization Retires Florence & Michael

The World Meteorological Organization has retired two hurricane names that made landfall in the United States last year.

Hurricane Florence made landfall in North Carolina in September and brought strong winds, a large storm surge, and extensive flooding. Florence moved very slowly and dropped nearly a years worth of rain across parts of eastern NC. This historic flooding lasted many weeks after Florence dissipated and moved away from the Carolinas. At least 51 people died as a result of Florence.

Hurricane Michael made landfall in Florida and had winds of 155 mph. This is third most intense hurricane to make landfall in the continuous United States based on pressure.

The new names for 2024 will be Francine and Milton.
